Digital Dreams

Hi. I still use LJ, follow my friends and similar, but I've moved my main host to Dreamwidth now, and am crossposting everything to here, but asking people to comment there.

Mat Bowles.

It's still fully interoperative, the OpenID comment functions there are good and improving, and I can follow everything from both sites easily.

Your humble servant seeks a boon.

Declare, Genius
I am, as I'm sure is well, a remarkably modest man. I would, for example, never dream of having a category tag for my journal called 'showing off', for that would be vulgar. And that the most popular item under discussion in the most recent [info]news post, and being linked to and discussed all over the site is my idea is, of course, something that merely provokes a modest smile.

For I am a humble and modest man. Right?

So, I'd like a favour from you, my friends and readers. )

Oh, you can send PMs to each other on site now, and select who can send them to you. You might want to go turn on e-notifcation of them, it defaults to off. And for those of you that hate the message centre, the direct link to just your inbox is right here. *cough*A certain person has a message waiting*cough*

[Coming Soon] LJ comment editing

Brain, Marvin-Brain
How great am I? You don't know? Things to cheer you up on the train home, a notification in your inbox from [info]coffeechica entitled DRUM ROLL:
This suggestion has been planned for implementation. Please watch the [info]lj_releases community for updates.
I knew what post it was before I opened it, but it was nice to be sure. So that's two fixes from one suggestion.

I'm still of the opinion that the concerns about trolls editing comments are missplaced, but those that run LJ abuse disagreed--we've come up with a way to get around the problem. I reserve the right to bitch about them messing up MY idea with poor implementation, but, y'know. I rock!

ETA: Changelog entry detailing how it works:
Bullet point summary of implementation--paid users only apparently )

Oh, had a great night out, met [info]nwhyte in the Melton Mowbray and talked SF geekery and politics with a bunch of people, was rather nice. Time to sleep now methinks.

Smarter than a Harvard Senior?

Um, I don't know how to react to this. [info]paulatpingu asks So how much do you know about American civic history?
On this quiz I scored 66%, which would place me in one of the top three American Universities when the same quiz was carried out there. Basically, even though I know very little about the specifics of US history, my general knowledge on the subject is better than most American college students.
The quiz itself is here at American Civic Literacy, my result?
You answered 47 out of 60 correctly — 78.33 %
Now, admittedly, some of the questions are about political theorists (Plato and Locke, for example), which both of us studied as undergrads. But, um, it's mostly about United States history and governance. From the breakdown of results by US college (they tested students in the Senior year):
1. Harvard University 69.56%
I, a Brit, score better in a test of US history, than the average senior at Harvard, the premier US university? And despite temptation, no googling, no look ups, just general knowledge and educated guesses.

I know there are smart, capable, switched on USians out there--a chunk of them are on my friends list. But seriously, if even the most educated know so little about their own history and system of government...

My brain hurts. Take the test, can you beat a Harvard senior?
Catching up, thanks for all the supportive comments during my travels yesterday, brain is now slowly waking back up

See, the internet says it, it must be true

Life
How smart are you? I reckon my worthy friends list could take that test and bump the avarages up a bit, right? Good good.

Went to [info]oldharrysgame recording last night after work, was good, weirdly, episodes 4 & 6 were recorded, not 3&4, cast availability or something (Gina's full report here. Day off today, have a job interview for a permanent job later, looks good on paper. Might write full report for last night on the community this afternoon/evening. Or I might just do something else, not sure.

Yup, still smart (just checking)

You win the Internet
You paid attention during 91% of high school!

85-100% You must be an autodidact, because American high schools don't get scores that high! Good show, old chap!

Do you deserve your high school diploma?
Create a Quiz

Except, of course, I don't have a High School diploma (and indeed just scraped a pass on one A-level). OK, I've got a BA, but I cheated to get into that (it's amazing what being old can get you, even if old is defined as over 25).

I, um, might be playing around with that site for a bit. Beats most of the others things I should be doing.

Apparently, I'm unique

This is my 501st post, apparently. That's to LJ, not on all the other places I've started writing since I signed up for this thing. [info]nadriel? In the unlikely event that [info]liberty_central actually works, or gets somewhere at all? It's your fault y'git, you got me writing again.

Unfortunately, I can't break my writers block. I need the inaugaral "real" article for [info]voting_taktix, but it won't flow. "Tactical voting is a myth", on a site dedicated to tactical voting? Yay for contradictions.

Also, nicked from someone else's LJ (look, I click on the profiles of cute girls who put themselves in userpics, ok? Anyone here not do that?):

9/9 Genius

You are 78% knowledgable and 96% intellectual.

Amazing! You have an incredible brain (intellect) and a powerhouse of information (knowledge)! Keep up the impressive work-- we all bow to you.

Tell me something I didn't know... )

Why I'm unique )

Tomorrow? Exeter, if I get up, to play silly game's at Steve's with Peter Pig. If I wake up. Oh, I also need to clean and tidy the flat, as it'll be the last chance between now and when I get back from [info]nadriel's. Two weeks holiday in one month? Yay! Must remember to buy tickets for those events.

Also, on the quiz thing? A few of the questions are US specific. Sorry, but knowing which Amendment does not isn't a History question, it's a Constitutional Theory and practice Q. I mean, I got that answer right anyway, but, y'know, I would've got a better score if the questions weren't aimed at one populace. Cos I is ded smart, see?

Anyone know anything about horses?

  • Aug. 16th, 2006 at 12:27 PM
Cool
Right, works outing on Sunday; I'm not going, but there was an internal quiz, the winner of which gets a £20 bet on the horses. They're all going to Newton Abbot racecourse for races this Sunday.

Half the questions were stats or company history, the rest were easy. Um, guess who wrote the company history marketing bumpf? Guess who does most of the annual stats analysis?

So, even though I'm not going, I get to place a bet on Sunday, my instructions are:
£20 to be placed on a nag of your choosing. If you don't have a race list, you could place your bet by proxy or choose a race number and name the favourite / second favourite (number 3) etc.
So, if anyone knows what form is, or how to choose a horse, or even what websites I could look at to figure out who is racing, etc?

I know someone out there must know this sort of thing...

Intuition thingy

Anarchist
Ms [info]itchyfidget is more emotionnally intuitive but less scientifically intuitive than me*. She also has a better tag for this sort of thing, egocentrism beats showing off any day. [info]doctorvee however is the other way around. Not sure about this one, but it's better than most of the recent ones I've done.

The 2-Variable Intuition Test )

*Consideting what she does for a living, is anyone else scared that this humanities BA gets a better Science result? Oh, wait, it's a silly meme

Your Final Quiz Score: 36 right out of a possible 60
The Monkey's Final Score: 16 right out of 60

You asserted your intellectual superiority brilliantly! The monkey is now left contemplating his own inferiority. Where others have failed to claim the mantel of unequivocal dominance over lesser species, you have truly succeeded! Congratulations on besting the ape and reaffirming the capabilities of the human mind. You have done mankind proud.

You scored in the 86th percentile.
(86% of quiz takers scored worse than you)

Not a bad little quiz, but very US-centric, so I really was guessing at some of the trivia Qs, and some of the Geography ones as well.

The scary thing about these memes, I got the same results as Blimpish. Oops...
What movie... )

What leader... )

If you do 'em, take the most questions possible, it takes bugger all time 'cos it's a good interface.

Oh yeah, yes, that is the correct UK time, and yes, insomnia gets worse if oyu don't need to get up the next day.

I'm Mat Bowles, a Devonshire lad displaced to Yorkshire. I'm a part-time analyst, marketer and website manage, although mostly I'm a house-husband.

Wikio - Top BlogsThis is my personal general interest journal where I write about or link to whatever I've fond that amused, intrigued or enraged me at the time. I'm a committed liberal, equalist and atheist, but I really like it when people can demonstrate I'm wrong, and have close friends with whom I completely disagree on some if not all of those points.
