Digital Dreams
Hi. I still use LJ, follow my friends and similar, but I've moved my main host to Dreamwidth now, and am crossposting everything to here, but asking people to comment there.
Mat Bowles.
It's still fully interoperative, the OpenID comment functions there are good and improving, and I can follow everything from both sites easily.

Picture. Rather amusing

Rosie Millard: worst parent ever to write an editorial?

I think I even understand the science of this one; thanks pTerry! Could a superheavy element â“ heavier than anything previously found in nature or made in the lab â“ exist naturally in the rocks of Earth?

Jen has a poll and some scans on the new film. Which I'm going to go see. Even if I go alone. It's not Bond, but it's still cool.

Annoyingly addictive, the telescopes game especially

Flash thing. Fun

Justin linked to this earlier, and it's as true today as it was then.

A reason to go to MySpace regularly? This are not good. Actually, it is good, it's damn good, Milk and Cheese are back online. This are very very good.
-
Why I rarely buy the IndyTab anymore: The final para begins: "So the trial of lower-case lesbian vs upper-case Lesbian is going ahead. Now, a lesbian on-line magazine called The Register has put forward a solution..."

Hari is one of those people that I either agree with strongly or disagree with vehemently. This analysis of WHY people voted BNP is better than many I've read, and accentuates the futility of the No Platform posturing.
-
Nielsen is awesome, again, and proves why formatting matters: On the average Web page, users have time to read at most 28% of the words during an average visit; 20% is more likely.

Mostly agree with this one to: Active voice is best for most Web content, but using passive voice can let you front-load important keywords in headings - This enhances scannability and effectiveness.

Started reading Alertbox before I learnt the basics of HTML, it's definitely helped in my approach, especially for blogging - I break the rules more often than I follow them, but when I really want people to read you'll notice
-
Zoe's spot on here - if a newspaper copies your entries wholesale and reprints them then they need your permission and they ought to pay. Exerpts for critique are fine, but substantive content isn't
-
Some good observations on blogging - there's a reason I always write in my name, gives me control: In a Google-Indexed Universe where the lines between online and offline lives are blurred, you don't have to fill in all of the blanks.

I grew up on Marvel comics, from the stuff I bought in the store at Butlins aged 5 through to the Transformers when I was 10 to the X Men when I fell for Psylocke. But comics take loads of money. They're doing The Avengers. Properly. Woo Hoo!

We saw this before Iron Man and, well, we loved it. I await the actual release as Smith really can act if made to, and he can definitely do comedy. I even laughed at the bit with the whale. Um, sorry bout that.

Site campaigning on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, going through parliament, because it has widespread implications for ordinary Britons. Next due on May 12th, more to follow when I've time, and a big reason to dislike Mad Nad

What it's like being part of a gay couple, even in supposedly liberal, civilised areas, still. From Debi, comes with a challenge I doubt I could manage at all: Spend an entire week pretending that you're not a couple.
OK, it's 2.30am and I'm wide awake thanks to a very ill 4-year-old, who's now off to the hospital with Mum and Granpa. So random amusements before I go to clear up.
Via a locked post from a normally great source of info, a rather off-the-wall webcomic, no ongoing plot, just many many silly vignettes, this one is class:
obersalzberg:: The home of Hitler, 1933--Doubt creeps in
And in good news for those of us still using the place, Facebook has woken up to the application spam problem and given many many ways to fix it. I reject almost all invites out of hand these days, I never did want to be a bloody vampire thankee muchly, and I definitely don't want to find out how gay I am. Of course, that half of the apps are made by data miners, spammers and arseholes makes me even more cautious, I'll stick to the ones that are actually useful. Or made by people I trust.
Meh, rambling. The rest of these I got from random people and don't appear to have saved who from, bit of a backlog. Long term readers will know I tend to like remakes, re-imaginings and new versions of old classics, so that they're redoing The Day the Earth Stood Still could be a good thing. Except they've cast Keanu as Klaatu. All aboard the failboat now? I don't recall ever seeing that boy act. Ah well. Indiana Jones IV: I need a pension is on its way, I'm looking forward to it, but it appears I need a companion, any volunteers? Jennie thinks, and I quote, that
aaronace gives us a nice fan-mix of the theme tune with clips from all the films. I liked it anyway. This one's a bit late, but meh. Some random bloke's guide to a succesful relationship and not being that ex. Think I mostly agree, opinions? Last up, how to make money in an era where copies can be made for free.
I sleep now, I hope. G'night all.

it's mysogonistic boy's own adventure bollocks, so is refusing, which is fair. Given that exactly the same can be said for Bond and she's a huge fan I don't really get it, and that it's boy's own adventure bollocks is surely the entire point? Anyway,

OK, so
requiem2adream posted a YouTube parody of the PC/Mac adds where it's DC/Marvel, and it amused me, lots. She also linked to the whole series of them. So I watched them. One after another. All evening. I chuckled. Lots. Toy superheroes arguing over their movie deals. Then they went to the bar.
( Part one-Starring Hulk as the bouncer! )
( Part two, because I can't resist posting it as well )
Of course, you may not actually have watched any of the films, or know who any of the characters are, or something. Um, which rock are you living under, and does it have WiFi?
Meh, off to watch a
now_show recording tomorrow (with
innerbrat), spent the evening in the pub with
nadriel and
d_notice_fd. Knackered. Time to sleep.
Oh yeah, nearly forgot. Doctor Whoogle, and other BBC Firefox / IE7 search plugins (Via

I'm ill. That's, of course, not Debi's fault. It's only a mild cold, but my concentration has gone to pot. That's not her fault either. What is her fault? Well, rather than spending the evening doing the things I meant to do? I've been hitting "random comic" at
jesus_and_mo. Today's offering:
Of course, one of the things I should have been reading today waas the membership pack I received in the post for the British Humanist Association. I joined it last week after a discussion at
bagrec's (about the point that about 50% of Britain appear to actually be atheist by inclination) reminded me of my decision to do so when next I had some cash, I was prompted to when Linda Smith died and I found out she'd been their president.
Reading through the literature, I might find out more about becoming an Officiant. Might.
There should be another post to follow, about the spammers I mentioned last week, but, well, my ability to type straight has gone to pot :-(
What's wrong with believing God had to commit suicide in order to pay himself the debt humans owed him because their ancestors were persuaded by a talking snake to eat a forbidden fruit?Just keep clicking around. Not, of course, for the easily offended. Or the humour impaired. But it's kept me happy all evening.

The DM of the Rings. I read the first, and chuckled, I kept reading, and chuckled lots. Then they introduced Legolas. And Gimli reminded me of
nadriel.
If I was well and at work, I'd have skimmed
linkfrenzy's post. As it it, I read more than a couple links. Maybe not managing to sleep/keep food down for three days has an advantage? Not one I want to repeat soon, anyway.

The advantage of an anthology comic is that there's always something you like( ... ), there's always something I like, even if it's just one little story in an issue full of dross. With the current arcs, I'm a bit meh ( about most of them ). But Malone? Who cares? It's the denouement today, the final installment, it's even on the cover. Meh, says I, but buys it anyway.
Y'see, Malone is the story of an amnesiac drifter ( ... ) So far, so dull. Last week, at the end, a character shows up at the door who knows who he really is. The art is pretty poor, but it was a character that looked vaguely familiar. Meh, says I, I still care not, it's a crap strip, move on.
This week? I read it through, again, as I always do on Wednesday lunchtime. The guy introduces himself as ( Spoiler ). My memory refuses to tell me who that is. I turn the page, still not caring. I turn the page to the next panel, he's going to say who Malone is, I'm hoping it might pique my interest. Speech bubble. "Your name is ( Spoiler - it's a big one )". Interest piqued. More than piqued.
Oh boy did that get my attention
It's no longer a Malone story. It's no longer a story abot an obscure backwater colony world. It's about ( Spoiler ). It's about ( Spoiler ). It's about what happened. It's cool. Crappy story about a character I didn't care about? It was until today. The art's still crap though( ... )
