Digital Dreams
Hi. I still use LJ, follow my friends and similar, but I've moved my main host to Dreamwidth now, and am crossposting everything to here, but asking people to comment there.
Mat Bowles.
It's still fully interoperative, the OpenID comment functions there are good and improving, and I can follow everything from both sites easily.

I wrote this 18 months ago, but I've linked to it increasingly recently to explain points, so I'm bringing it to the top. The electoral system encourages broad church coalitions and two main parties. Every vote is thus, in some way, tactical.

Charlie goes back over Fermi's classic 'if they exist, why aren't they here' paradox with a bunch of possible explanations.

Follow up from Fermi - Father Gabriel Funes, said intelligent beings created by God could exist in outer space - the Vatican is organising a conference next year to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the author of the Origin of Species, Charles Da

Very very cool. Link to part one of some production stills and mock ups of the CGI original design Cylons from the Razor TV movie. Part two, witht he gold cylon, is worth clicking through to.

For those that wanted them from last time, Jen's now posted the whole article.
All of this has happened before...

...all of this will happen again. The Scott King film blog has a promotional pic and explanation for the next (final) season of Battlestar Galactica which also has a much bigger version of the pic, both from Entertainment Weekly. The pic itself has some minor spoiler info that you'd need to work hard to figure out, but the attached scan of the annotations has some pretty major stuff. There is, for example, a new ( SPOILER! ), Apollo ( SPOILER! ), Baltar's Six ( SPOILER! ) and perhaps most importantly ( SPOILER! ), meaning that the last Cylon is ( SPOILER! ).
ETA: There's more speculation, some reversed images and a comparison to the original over at
altitudeandwine. Thanks to
halcyon_shift in the comments.
Eeenteresting. Got Jennie Razor for Christmas, very cool, looking forward to this being broadcast. Via

Yeah, love you too darlin' ;-)
OTOH, I did get a cool Winnie the Pooh card from
shrublette, and a bunch of birthday and engagement cards from the aunts and uncles, looks like they've been address sharing again.
Oh, and the Amazon delivery arrived. And
shrublette chose me some Maya Gold. So I may possibly be watching ep 1 of BSG s3 while eating lunch...
I spent almost an hour at the card shop trying to find exactly the right one for you. The soppy ones were too pink and vomit-inspiring, and the funny ones were clichéd or looked cheap and tacky..Inside it says
So I ended up choosing this
(Be thankful you didn't et the Bob the Builder "I am 3" with an extra 3 scrawled on it ;-) )
Thinking of you at this time of great sorrow.
Yeah, love you too darlin' ;-)

When asked about the quality of television today he made a comment that "Nothing on TV has ever been as good as (the new) Battlestar Galactica."!Who said that, you ask? Joss Whedon. The guy who made Buffy, Angel, Firefly. The one that Uncle Rusty is trying to copy, rather than learn from and build upon.
Joss Whedon thinks BSG is better than anything he's ever done for TV. And I agree with him. Re watched a fnumber of episodes over the weekend with
Back home from Yorkshire, knackered, had a great weekend, spending time with
Newton's Wakeon the bus up, and am now about half way through
The Modern World, loved the former, any Charles Stross fans not already reading Ken should do so, and the latter is proving to be interesting up unitl this point.
Have backread my "people I actually have met" filter, but not really commenting much, far too knackered and incoherent, so I shall simply turn in, work tomorrow.
It's a frakkin mirror. Sorry. Don't blame me, blame Ozzy.
Oh yeah, Jim Baen for best editor, naturally. While a lot of his books were pulp, they were great pulp, and his approach to e-books and the Baen free library were spot on, hope the industry catches up soon. I have no Hugo vote, and there's no way I can get to WordCon in Tokyo, but always interesting to follow.
Been watching DVDs a bit (naturally), Media Player Classic is a great little bit of kit, got right around my weird 'driver not installed properly' issue since the last reformat. So I finally got around to watching Dark Angel Series II. So very very cool. And y'know what, I think it would still be cool even if I didn't have the massive thing for Jessica Alba. The weird thing though? Virtually every episode has an actor that goes on to be in Battlestar Galactica. Grace Park/Boomer has a simply exceptional lines:
FEMALE X5: Copulation was unsuccessful, ma’am.Gator is an anarchist troublemaker, the Cheif is a hotel desk clerk, Dee plays Joshua's blind girlfriend. I ended up playing 'spot the actor' in virtually every episode. Still, very cool, both to catch up with Dark Angel (the DVDs didn't work in my old player, it's a cheapo one) and see all the weird casting choices. The shows share three different casting directors, so perhaps not too surprising. Naturally, afterwards, I had to watch BSG for a bit; currently dipping in and out of SII, Resurection Ship remains a top notch two-parter. If you're not already into it, here's a few good reasons to be a Battlestar Galactica fan. But on a completely unrelated note; Squeeze remains the best X-Files episode ever. Just in case you weren't sure...
RENFRO: Explain.
FEMALE X5: X5-698 failed to achieve minimum mission requirements, ma’am.
Windows XP: $100I DL'd it earlier, and haven't gone through attempting to install it yet. I was going to, but reading the linked article, I may delay a little. Anyone know:
Running IE7 through 5 years of development and 5 beta versions before releasing it: Billions of dollars and a full 15% of the browser market.
Finding a new critical security flaw less than 12 hours after its release: Priceless.
Some things, money can't buy. For everything else, there's Microsoft.
- Do I need to have installed and run Genuine Advantage in order for IE7 to work?
- If so, and I try to install it without, will it kill my IE6?
- Is there a way to install it without Genuine Advantage
- Is GA still obnoxious peice o shit spyware that will auto connect to Redmond every day or have they fixed that?
I only want to run IE7 as a test copy, so I can see what sites look like with it &c, I have no intention of giving up on my plug-in laden FireFox just yet thankee, although Fx 2.0 isn't looking good at this stage for this end user...
In other news, I've not been well last few days. There may be a post on that later, but, well, not immediately.
Also, does anyone know where I can get a Driver for my DVD-Rom, or alternately what might be wrong with it? I want to run some DVDs through it, but both Real and WMP way that the DVD rom itself is sans driver, after they've DL'd the codecs they need. I've tried the ssytem install disks, and the fujitsu-siemens support pages, to no avail. All I want to do is make some screencaps damnit!
(yes, I may have watched a little too much Battlestar Galactica last few days, and yes, I do want umpteen Adama icons, but meh, it had to happen eventually, right?)
Didn't think of this while I did them all, but a prize for the least spelling/grammar errors should be given out. NB, I don't think any of them have none.
Least blanket assumptions or mass generalisations may be more difficult. ( Crappy what goth test, but purty pictures ) Oh look, I'm an old fart. Quel surprise eh? ( Burn the land, boil the sea ) WTF? Ah well, the test is actually not bad, I didn't scream at the grammar or spelling errors, and there are lots of results.( I'm the dark brooding one (again) )Meh, not even a pretty picture... ( If I'm this, how far off the scale are some of my friends? )Methinks some of the creators of these tests are a little too innocent for their own good. ( The guy in charge. Again. Anyone spot a pattern here? )Is it wrong that I've almost been talked into reading the books? ( How sweet and innocent; 'the space between the legs'... )Really? Never would have figured that out on my own. ( Radical come reformist/pupulist? Me? Never )This one isn't bad. and let's be honest, it's not innaccurate is it? ( Somehow, this doesn't surprise me, and given the previous one, is probably fairly accurate ) Unlike JFK, I don't spend half my life chasing blondes. Brunettes, redheads, bright purple, etc, yes, but not blondes... ( I refuse to believe it ) Or is that the whole point? ( Only 42% Green? Oh, wait, US Green party... )Probably close enough, if the Dems have a radical libertarian-left reforming branch. ( And when, exactly, did you ask me about my politics? Oh, you didn't. So you must know all about them then. You're pretty close about the music though... ) I hate the govt because I like punk music? No, I loath this govt because they're a bunch of authoritarian berderline fascists, I like punk music because I like punk music. The two are only vaguely linked, and there's achance I may like the next govt. Unlikely, but still...
Well, what else is a boy to do when he takes the day off ill? Sort the flat, update the websites, the laundry, some washing up, etc? Go away conscience, I saw a pretty picture...
