An attempt at content: meme time

Dawkins
Still not shaken my block on writing Actual Real Contenttm, so in an attempt to write something that isn't linkspam, I'll do this. [info]that bastard Duncan tagged me for it anyway, so might as well.
1. The rules of the game get posted on the beginning.
2. Each player answers the rules about himself [or indeed herself].
3. At the end of the post, the player tags five people and posts their names as a link then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they’ve been tagged and asking them to read his [or her] blog. [because if you're not checking your incoming links you're crap and off topic comments are rude].
So, to business:

What I was doing ten years ago:

1998. I was half way through my Access to Higher Education course, grateful my parents were letting me live there rent free so I could afford it, and working part time to pay for fuel, books and snacks. So at this time ten years ago odds are I was in a shop doing actual paid work. On a Sunday.

Five things on my To-Do list today:

1. Get out of bed
2. Go to The Ship for lunch
3. Go to the Red Rooster to for a drink and watch the band
4. Flirt with the pretty barmaid at the Rooster (again)
5. Take the damn dogs for a walk at some point

Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

Buy a great big place that we can turn into a pub/nightclub/venue/library and hire people to run it, pay off debts, go on a world tour, give a chunk of cash to the Lib Dems in a trust like Joseph Rowntree, hire people to do all my annoying tasks, set up several friends in businesses then just sit back, enjoy life and read and write what I felt like.

Three of my bad habits:

1. Not getting out of bed when I should
2. Procrastination
3. Nose picking

Five places I’ve lived:

1. Galmpton
2. Manchester
3. Salisbury
4. Exeter
5. Brighouse

Five jobs I’ve had:

1. Kitchen porter in a rest home (not fun)
2. Games Workshop, p/t, full time, acting manager then p/t again
3. LAL Torbay language school as Accommodation Manager
4. Membership Administrator at the Liberal Democrats
5. Business Development Manager at Purple Channel Marketing

Five books I’ve recently read:

Right, cheating sort of on the first one as the most recent five books I've read are in a sequence I'm re-reading.
1. The Guards/Ankh Morpork sequence by Terry Pratchett, started with Guards Guards, went back to Moving Pictures, then Men at Arms and Feet of Clay, currently on Jingo. Not as great as I remembered but haven't reread them for ages.

2. The Science of Discworld by Pratchett, Stewart and Cohen, because I'd never got around to it and Jennie told me to. Actually rather good, quite a bit of science I didn't know and even the stuff I did know was well explained, a very good intro to science for those that switched off at school and now regret it.

3. John Stuart Mill: Victorian Firebrand by Richard Reeves. Met the author when he succesfully proposed Mill as greatest ever Liberal at a Liberal History Group event in Brighton. Given he was up against Paddy Ashdown proposing Gladstone and a bunch of others, he walked all over them in an impressive style and, well, Dude! It's a proper book on JS Mill. Bloody good, but very long, nowhere near finished it yet.

4. Doctor Who Target novelisations by various authors, mostly first Doctor stuff, Jennie bought a job lot off eBay awhileback and they're nice and slim so fit in my coat pocket for bus journeys and similar. Currently on The Crusaders.

5. Sinister Dexter: Gunshark Vacation by Dan Abnett and various artists. Dan Abnett rules when it comes to pulpy SF, and Sinister Dexter were a great addition to 2000ad. Bought it for Jennie at Xmas, very cool to reread the earliest stuff.

Five people or communities I’m going to tag:

OK, I normally leave these things open but I'll make a change. [info]Jennie, [info]Alex, [info]Debi, [info]Justin and you. Yes, you.

You mostly got an icon because I haven't got around to coding the insets for comms and feeds yet. Will do soon though...

Honest.

aaand fixted. Everyone gets an icon now, and as soon as I've fixed the template to make it more intuitive I'll get around to posting about how cool LJ addons is wen you code a huge pile of insets yourself.

Who am I kidding. Me, post? Just so not happening at the moment.

I love The Science of Discworld books so much; I think they brought me a small ephiphany and fundamentally changed my worldview. I used to have an LJ icon inspired by them, too (narrativium's square on the periodic table), but I can't find it now. :)

I think I may have seen it before but not actually got it. Between that and bloodimindium it does all make fairly good sense, which is scary.

Haven't told SB yet, but given the shelf is full, they're going into non-fiction on our shelves...

I consider myself suitably chastised
Stupid LJ de-linking anon comments and not letting me fix it, Justin's link is:

and contains some interesting answers.

About

I'm Mat Bowles, a Devonshire lad displaced to Yorkshire. I'm an analyst specialising in politics and make a living from IT marketing, please don't hold that against me.

This is my personal general interest journal where I write about or link to whatever I've fond that amused, intrigued or enraged me at the time. I'm a committed liberal, equalist and atheist, but I really like it when people can demonstrate I'm wrong, and have close friends with whom I completely disagree on some if not all of those points.

Coalition For Choice

There probably ought to be a Creative Commons licence in here somewhere but in the meantime consider this permission to quote me (link) & link to what I write.

If you decide to keep reading, please do say hello, let me know where you found me from, etc. I promise not to bite (well, unless you want me to...)
