So then, Tony's off soon

Politics
Tim at [info]bloggerheads was working on this one for a bit, thought I'd already posted it but must've forgotten. His breakdown of the dramatis personae is rather good as well. The basic theme we could've been anything that we wanted to be pretty much does sum up this Govt; so many lost opportunities, broken promises, half hearted efforts and poorly thought through responses. Ah well. Enjoy:

The ever excellent [info]paul_linford_fd sums it ups nicely:
But with all his talent - and public goodwill - Tony Blair really could have been anything that he wanted to be, really could have been up there with Clem, Sir Winnie and the Iron Lady.
ETA: [info]andrewrilstone I thought I had better say it before someone else does:
There's is an awkward clash on the TV schedules tonight. On one channel at 7PM there's a programme about an evil meglomaniac who gets himself elected prime minister for his own nefarious purposes, while at the same time on the other side it's "Doctor Who".
Very droll.

Yeah, proof-reading goes to pot when Byron is nagging to go out. He's had a jaunt around the tennis courts now.

Fair 'nuff. See edit for added linky goodness (I've been sorting out my 'blogs' filter to get rid of the chaff).

Maybe Brown had the same comparisons in mind, and is hoping to become a Lloyd George? The parallels can't be lost on someone as canny as Uncle Gordon... And that's why he completely shot himself in the foot by trying to get into bed with Paddy Pantsdown...?

Possibly. Can't actually blame him for approaching Paddy; have to wonder how Paddy would've responded if he'd offered something actually worthy, like Foreign Secretary, that might've been worth resigning the whip over I reckon.

It depends what Paddy wants most, though. For him personally, yes, possibly, that would have been worth resigning the whip over. But it would have totally scuppered the party and it's chances of effecting electoral reform if someone as iconic as Paddy jumped ship. I'd like to think that reform is more important to him than personal power, although obviously I can't know that.

BTW, the graph thing on Facebook? I think you must have answered emphatically the question that I put "maybe" to; you're one little square over from me on the leftieness...

Aye; the test itself is biased, it's designed to persuade people they're really libertarians, which I dislike because most people are more liberal than their politicians anyway. But virtually all the LibDems that have done it are in roughly the same place. Prefer the Compass; not as honest but at least it gives more depth and isn't full of leading questions.

You're right about Paddy of course, and I reckon he's still hoping to see the party break through and make Govt before he needs to retire.

Format Question
Nice journal, and I like the joke.

How do you do the sweet grey quote boxes?

Re: Format Question
It's a standard CSS tweak, quite easy once you know how. Go to Journal Style and put the following three bits of code into the custom CSS:
q {
background:#777;
       -moz-border-radius: 5px;
       -webkit-border-radius: 5px;
  font-style: italic;
}
blockquote {
background:#777;
padding:10px;
       -moz-border-radius: 10px;
       -webkit-border-radius: 10px;
  font-style: italic;
}
blockquote blockquote {
background:#4a525a;
padding:10px;
       -moz-border-radius: 10px;
       -webkit-border-radius: 10px;
  font-style: italic;
}
You'll want to change the colours, and always make sure you put quotes in either [q] or [blockquote] tags. The curved corners only show in Firefox and Safari, they're CSS3 tricks and IE is only barely CSS2 compliant :-( The third set of code is to remove the grey if there's a quote inside a quote, brings it back to my normal default.

I keep meaning to write up a how to, but then I get distracted by pretty things like more Doctor Who...

Introspection

I'm Mat Bowles, a Devonshire lad displaced to Yorkshire. I'm a part-time analyst, marketer and website manage, although mostly I'm a house-husband.

Wikio - Top BlogsThis is my personal general interest journal where I write about or link to whatever I've fond that amused, intrigued or enraged me at the time. I'm a committed liberal, equalist and atheist, but I really like it when people can demonstrate I'm wrong, and have close friends with whom I completely disagree on some if not all of those points.

Coalition For Choice

There probably ought to be a Creative Commons licence in here somewhere but in the meantime consider this permission to quote me (link) & link to what I write.

If you decide to keep reading, please do say hello, let me know where you found me from, etc. I promise not to bite (well, unless you want me to...)
