Flags of the world, amusements and LJs...

The world's flags given letter grades - genius. Incredibly funny and so so true.

Also, BritBlog Roundup - once more, with added [info]mapp goodness; wasn't going to, but the Phishing thing just needed a bit of promotion; any news on that yet Mark? From there, I find [info]rhodri, who wrote one of the more amusing articles in the Indy recently, and that post gives a more lighthearted breakdown of the picture. Some of the comments on that thread are surreal, but this one (the nominated one) is even better. Taking the piss out of Innocent has to be done, even if we do love their overpriced products — I sometimes do copyrighting for work, and the question thing is deliberate; "do you?" is more effective at atention grabbing than "do this", although I insist on it being a more suggestion thing: "Spare room? Host students for..." (I forget the rest).

Have I mentioned I hate being ill? Yesterday, when I woke up I felt a little groggy, by the time I'd done the ablutions I knew I was coming down with summat. Nothing serious, just a head cold, but I fell all gummed up and Lemsip isn't helping :-(

Ah well. Oh; LJ client users — do any of them allow for a better editing of filter groups option than the web interface? It's a pain figuring out that interface and getting it right, want to sort my view filters and my post filters out to be a little more sane...

"It's a pain figuring out that interface and getting it right"

It is?

I have 200+ 'friends' of one sort or another. I want to create some filters, remove some filters, and move most of the friends around.

What I want is to see what filters a friend is in and move it easily; I can do it by going to their u-info and then friending them again, but that's the easiest way I can see.

Hmmm... also, about the flags...

The dude says that there's "no international body responsible for upholding simple standards of vexillilic aesthetics" which is all well and good, but actually it's mostly done, if needs be, by the Heraldic Councils, mostly in Europe. In Scotland the control of heraldry is fully legal and the Lord Lyon King of Arms retains powers (including imprisonment, fines and defacing bogus arms) which he does not hesitate to use. (from Wikipedia) How cool is that?!

Very; husband of my old boss at work is head of a minor Scottish clan; they take these things seriously; I used to think it was daft, now I really like it.

I don't think I could have gone through all the flags, some of them are so bad it's silly; did you see Nepal and Guam?

I like the Nepalese flag. Yes, it's a bizarre shape, but conforming is boring. As for the Guamese... well, yes...

Also, the flag is probably that shape because it was easier to carry streaming from a pole on your backpack.

Now that's just silly.

Possibly true, but silly.

Why silly? It's smaller, so less wind drag. Makes perfect sense.

Um.. manage>friends>Edit Custom Friends Groups isn't workin for yoU?

It's a very clunky interface and you can't see at a glance who's where. Moving one person is easy sorting everyone is a massive pain.

I enjoyed the flag catagorisation... Beats me why no-one thought to do this earlier?!?! I'm not too sure that the Union Jack counts as "too busy", but cirtainly buy the whole "colonial nonsence" bit!

Are you likely to be arround at SC this coming week?

Ublikely; have booked weekend off, but can't really afford it, just finished paying off the fines, and have now got the Council Tax to worry about :-(

Possibly, haven't ruled it out, but circa £40 just to get to London makes it pricey before thinking about anything else.

For some insane reason, I don't filter the 200+ people and communities I read, so I can't help you there, I'm afraid...

I think you answered that one yourself. How? Oh, wait, it's you.

You have Semagic installed though, right? Can you have a look at the options see if it has got something in there? Don't want to DL it just to find it's a waste of time, 'modify friend' options are getting annoying...

Not that I can see, although it includes links to most of the web settings bits in one way or another.

Ah well, worth a try anyway.

Oi!

Filters are friends groups, and these can be edited in Semagic (Journal > Edit Friends > Friend Groups). It's marginally nicer than the web interface...

Thank you

That was what I needed to know. I shall now dl Semagic and see what all the fuss is about...

Hello as well. It's unusual to get a LJ entry onto BritBlog unless I nominated it, and given that I'd read some of your stuff before...

I said that. Didn't I say that? *looks* Yes, yes I did. But yes, I thought so, got there via a random link on one of the nominees.

Introspection

I'm Mat Bowles, a Devonshire lad displaced to Yorkshire. I'm a part-time analyst, marketer and website manage, although mostly I'm a house-husband.

Wikio - Top BlogsThis is my personal general interest journal where I write about or link to whatever I've fond that amused, intrigued or enraged me at the time. I'm a committed liberal, equalist and atheist, but I really like it when people can demonstrate I'm wrong, and have close friends with whom I completely disagree on some if not all of those points.

Coalition For Choice

There probably ought to be a Creative Commons licence in here somewhere but in the meantime consider this permission to quote me (link) & link to what I write.

If you decide to keep reading, please do say hello, let me know where you found me from, etc. I promise not to bite (well, unless you want me to...)
